The ICC will look into a complaint from the BCCI against Clive Lloyd

November 21, 2008 · Leave a Comment

The ICC will look into a complaint from the BCCI against Clive Lloyd, the ICC cricket committee chairman, for suggesting the unrecognised ICL and the IPL, run by the BCCI, should learn to co-exist. However, Haroon Lorgat, the ICC chief executive, said it would first check with Lloyd to understand the context and veracity of the remarks that were reported in an Indian newspaper.

Confirming the ICC had received an email from N Srinivasan, the BCCI secretary, on the issue, Lorgat told Cricinfo the ICC would approach the issue in a “fair and appropriate” manner. There was no time-frame involved in the process, he said.

Asked about the ICL during a private visit to Mumbai last week, Lloyd, the former West Indies captain had told Times of India that “there’s nothing like having a discussion to break the ice”, and suggested the West Indies needed leagues like the ICL and the IPL to revive the game in the country.

The BCCI on Thursday wrote to the ICC seeking action against Lloyd and compared the situation to the stepping down of Sunil Gavaskar as ICC cricket committee chairman earlier this year. Gavaskar was asked by the ICC to choose between his ICC role and that of a media commentator.

Lorgat said he didn’t believe the comparison was valid. “We need to first establish if the merits of the case are the same,” Lorgat told Cricinfo. “Personally, I don’t believe so. We need to just ensure he does not make comments that are not appropriate. And if it is different case we need to establish exactly what the facts are without which it is very difficult to make comments.”

The BCCI has adopted a hard-line position against ICL, and banned players associated with it from all forms of official cricket. It has also refused to entertain requests from the ICL for recognition, and pushed for a worldwide ban on players and officials associated with the Twenty20 league.

Interestingly, the BCCI’s Asian allies have emerged with conflicting policies on ICL. Sri Lanka Cricket, headed by Arjuna Ranatunga, has allowed six ICL players to participate in a domestic competition, while Javed Miandad, the new director-general of the Pakistan board, has questioned the intent of the bans enforced by past PCB administrations on players contracted with the ICL.

Dostana

November 14, 2008 · Leave a Comment

Filmmaker Karan Johar s much-hyped Gen-Next movie Dostana that was released Friday is being distributed by Yash Raj Films.

Karan has invested around Rs.450 million in the movie under his banner Dharma Productions. The film has been shot entirely in Miami. According to an industry insider, Karan sold the distribution rights of the movie for Rs.900 million to Yash Raj Films.

Now Yash Raj Films (YRF) has released approximately 1,000 prints of the films worldwide

The film is getting a mixed response in terms of bookings because of its humorous take on male sexuality.

Starring Abhishek Bachchan and John Abraham, who pretend to be gay in the movie, Dostana is drawing huge advance bookings in multiplexes but leaving single-screens cold, say trade pundits.

Dostana is a multiplex movie and it may fare well in the international market like Karan Johar s previous movies, but not so much for the single-screens here. Considering its bold subject dealing with sexual orientation of men, it is targeted only for the gentry and not the masses, Joginder Mahajan, a Delhi-based distributor, told IANS.

Ajit Jain, programmer for leading single-screens in Uttar Pradesh, echoed the same and said: Karan Johar s films are mostly for the upper class and not for the masses.

Just like his previous movies Kal Ho Naa Ho and Kabhi Alvida Naa Kehna, Dostana is also over the board with its content in comparison to the standard conventions of the middle-class people who might find it hard to accept the subject shown in the movie, he added.

Produced by Dharma Productions, the film is the directorial debut of Karan’s second unit assistant director Tarun Mansukhani.

Set entirely in Miami, Dostana also stars Priyanka Chopra and Bobby Deol.

The trade pundits are not reacting positively to Abhishek’s presence in the film. His earlier two releases – Sarkar Raj and Drona – bombed at the box office.

Abhishek Bachchan s films have not been doing well this year. So, the industry people are also keeping their fingers crossed for Dostana , as he has not proved to be lucky and profitable at all this year, Mahajan said.

A reliable source from PVR cinemas said: It s going house full in mostly all our multiplexes and we have bookings till Sunday so far.”

Tushar Dhingra, COO, BIG cinemas said: “It’s opened very well here in Mumbai and till now we are going really good on bookings.”

Dharma Productions first movie made in 1980 was also called Dostana and it starred Amitabh Bachchan, Shatrughan Sinha and Zeenat Aman in the lead.

However, the two movies have nothing in common other than their titles.

Nicole Kidman is set to play the world’s first transsexual in an independent film starring fellow best actress Oscar-winner Charlize Theron, according to reports.

Australian beauty Kidman will star and produce The Danish Girl, a movie based on the true story of Danish artists Einar and Gerda Wegener, according to entertainment industry daily The Hollywood Reporter.

Einar Wegener, who will be played by Kidman, was a male artist who underwent ground-breaking surgery to become a woman in 1931 after pretending to be a female model in a series of successful portraits painted by Gerda Wegener.

Theron, a best actress Oscar-winner for Monster, will play Gerda Wegener, the report said. The film is to be adapted from David Ebershoff’s successful 2000 novel of the same name.

Nepal Records for Maximum Tourists arrival

November 7, 2008 · Leave a Comment

Nepal, regarded a Shangri-La for holiday makers with its Himalayan ranges, assortment of religious shrines and network of casinos, has recorded the highest tourist arrivals in eight years.

According to the Nepal Tourism Board Monday, figures released by the Immigration Office at the Tribhuvan International Airport indicate that 50,567 tourists visited Nepal in October, the highest in a single month since 2000.

The opening of two more casinos, a host of adventure sports like Everest skydiving and mountain biking as well as international music and film festivals have contributed to lure more foreign tourists.

The total number of visitors till October 2008 reached 307,748 and if the October growth is any indication, by the year-end, it could catch up with the idyllic situation in 1999 – when the country had hosted 421,000 visitors.

India remains the largest tourist-generating market for Nepal, registering a 14 percent growth in October. It has set the trend for South Asia with an overall positive growth of 26.3 per cent. In this, Bangladesh and Pakistan registered growth respectively by 73.9 per cent and 35.3 per cent. Only Sri Lanka showed a decrease of 5.9 per cent.

Other Asian countries like Singapore, Thailand, South Korea, Malaysia and China have maintained the upward trend with 150.4 per cent, 53.2, 24.4, 23.2 and 1.6 per cent growth respectively. However, Japan witnessed negative growth by 10.9 per cent.

Britain, Israel, France, Germany, the Netherlands, Norway, Switzerland and Sweden have also maintained the upward trend as well as the US and Canada. Only Italy and Spain registered decrease in arrival figures by 13.2 per cent and 7.5 per cent respectively.

Tourism has begun to look up since the 1999 hijacking of an Indian Airlines aircraft on way to New Delhi from Kathmandu led to plummeting in the number of tourists to the Himalayan nation.

The hijacking of the aircraft on Christmas Eve to Afghanistan and the slaying of a passenger by the hijackers, created a fear psychosis, rocking the tourism industry, one of the mainstays of Nepal’s economy.

The figures continued to fall after the massacre of Nepal’s royal family in 2001, and the peaking of a communist insurgency that killed over 13,000 people.

Then in 2005 came the coup by then King Gyanendra, who shut down Nepal’s only airport, cut off phone lines nationwide and declared a state of emergency, delivering an additional blow to the ailing industry.

Three years later, however, with the Maoist guerrillas having laid down arms and come to power through an election, tourism once again began to flourish in the country.

The Neopal Tourism Board is now hoping that the visit by UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon last week to Lumbini in south Nepal, the birthplace of the Buddha, will attract more Buddhists in the days to come.

Aishwarya Rai sidelined pink panther

November 7, 2008 · 1 Comment

Bollywood’s most coveted actress, Aishwarya Rai Bachchan recently faced something she hasn’t faced ever before – snubbing. As the former Miss World was getting ready for her big Hollywood project – The Pink Panther, she realised, much to her shock, that she was being left out of all promos, posters etc.

Originally, Ash was to appear with Steve Martin in the promos, but now it seems, The Father of the Bride star is being featured in the promo without her esteemed company.

Reports say that the Bachchan daughter-in-law was really excited to be a part of this big Hollywood project, and thought it to be the first among many to come mainstream Hollywood films. The said snubbing has brought much disappointment and indignation to the actress.

The production house has given a hint that they weren’t quite sure how to play up her star status, since it is really limited to Asia.

So much for international acclaim. Perhaps Ash will take this incident as a heads-up on the reality of her popularity. Let’s hope she’ll take a leaf out of Bipasha’s book, and pledge to maintain her queenly status in Bollywood instead of running to Uncle Sam.

Automotive Business

November 7, 2008 · Leave a Comment

Business excellence is an ideal that all good entrepreneurs strive to achieve.  In fact, many organizations are devoted to honoring those businesses that best exemplify this concept.  However, business excellence cannot be strictly defined.  Rather, it varies from one industry to another.  For example, in the automotive industry, business excellence includes customer commitment, quality control, efficient supply, and innovative management.Along with Automotive Sales Process,Automotive Service Process required.

Here we see about some key aspects for business excellence.Automotive Business Excellence Focus on following aspects given below

Leaders in the automotive industry understand the need to form a strong bond with customers.  Perhaps more than other sectors, consumers are more likely to make a decision regarding an automobile purchase based upon their experience with those in the industry.

The second aspect of customer commitment is meeting societal needs and desires.  This means staying informed of what vehicle features are most important to consumers.  Such information can be garnered using formal surveys and demographic research. Thus, entrepreneurs need to be concerned with two key features relating to customer commitment.  The first is meeting the needs of the consumer, financially and socially.  People need automobiles that meet their economic means.  This not only means getting a good initial purchase price, but also finding a vehicle that will require minimal repair and maintenance down the road.  Consumers also want to purchase automobiles that will not require excess money to be spent on fuel.  Therefore, business excellence includes finding more cost-efficient production and distribution processes, and subsequently passing these savings on to the consumer.

In addition to customer commitment, business excellence must include exceptional quality control measures.  This means ensuring that automotive vehicles are safe and easy to maintain.

Finally, business excellence in the automotive industry requires innovative management.
