Aamir On Ghajini After A huge Success

January 13, 2009 · Leave a Comment

Buoyed by the box-office collection of Ghajini, actor filmmaker Aamir Khan said it indicates the success of a film.

“For me, the feeling that my hard work has been appreciated is priceless as I go by my instinct while choosing a script. When I hear a script, I react as an audience,” he said.

It is very difficult to define the potential of any film. “I did Taare Zameen Par because I loved the story. I had no idea that it would do the business that it eventually did, Aamir said while celebrating Ghajini’s success as it grossed Rs 200-crore worldwide.

“When I was offered the film, I was sceptic and felt that Salman or Akshay with a well-built could do better. But, it was Surya, the lead actor in the Tamil version, who convinced me that only I could do justice to the role. That is how I got the confidence to go ahead,” said the actor.

Aamir admitted that Ghajini’s success had put him under pressure to deliver the same in his forthcoming movies. “Success is not in my hands. I can only follow my heart and work with all the sincerity and hard work that I always do. I would be happy if my next film 3 Idiots breaks all Ghajini records.”

Toiling hard for the eight-pack abs for Ghajini, Aamir said it had been a “testing time” for him during his one year of training. “I had to stretch myself to a limit. Losing the physique is also equally strenuous. I have to sport a lean look for 3 Idiots and I am now in the process of losing weight,” he added.

“Ghajini had a pan-India potential and was marketed well. Also, audiences had not seen a good action film for a long time”, he said.

According to Aamir, late Sunil Dutt had inspired him to take his job as a challenge and with determination as he was always ready to risk his life for the sake of a good shot. “This has inspired me to choose the most unusual films,” he said.

On his dream project of bringing the epic Mahabharata on the silver screen, Aamir said it required massive preparations, research and commitment. “I would love to do it. But not in immediate future. Karna is an ideal role to play, but I do not fit in the role due to my physical appearance. I think I can do Krishna’s role,” a witty Aamir said.

Tottenham beats Wigan 3-1 in FA Cup

January 3, 2009 · Leave a Comment

Roman Pavlyuchenko scored twice as Tottenham’s revival under Harry Redknapp continued with a 3-1 victory over Wigan to reach the fourth round of the FA Cup on Friday.

Russian striker Pavlyuchenko scored from the penalty spot in the 52nd minute after debutant Wigan goalkeeper Richard Kingson was judged to have brought down Fraizer Campbell. Croatia striker Modric added a second in the 76th after a shot from Jamie O’Hara hit the post.

Although Henri Camara replied for the Latics in the 88th, Pavlyuchenko made sure that eight-time FA Cup winner Spurs made it to the last 32 of football’s oldest domestic cup competition with his second goal in injury time.

Redknapp, who guided Portsmouth to an FA Cup triumph last season at Wembley, has lifted Spurs away from last place in the Premier League, into the fourth round of the FA Cup, and the knockout phase of the UEFA Cup since he arrived at White Hart Lane two months ago. Now that the transfer window was open, he was trying to buy Portsmouth striker Jermaine Defoe.

“The crowd would like him, we’d all like him but he belongs to Portsmouth,” Redknapp said. “If they want to keep him, it’s up to them. It’s their decision. I have a couple of fantastic options but if we can get the people we want then we will be strong.”

Wigan’s Kevin Kilbane almost handed Spurs a first-half lead when his attempted clearance flew just past his own net.

Redknapp was forced to send on Campbell to replace the injured Darren Bent after 27 minutes before he saw his team twice go close just before halftime.

Modric had a low shot saved by Kingson after a stepover by Pavlyuchenko had set up the opening. Then a low, left-foot shot by David Bentley flew past the near post.

Spurs broke through in the 52nd when Ghana international Kingson, starting because Chris Kirkland was injured, brought down Campbell as the striker chased a through ball and Pavlyuchenko rolled in the penalty.

Four minutes after being beaten from the penalty spot, Kingson made a quality acrobatic save to keep out a diving header from Campbell.

Jonathan Woodgate rescued Spurs in the 60th when Camara got clear for Wigan only for the defender to get back and clear off his toe before the striker could shoot.

Pavlyuchenko lobbed a shot wide of an empty net and Modric fired straight at Kingson as Spurs continued to create chances. Then Pavlyuchenko pulled a shot wide in the 74th after a slick Spurs move opened up the Wigan defense.

But Tottenham went further ahead two minutes later when a low, left-foot shot from O’Hara hit the post and Modric reacted quickest to slide the ball home.

Wigan hit back in the 88th when Luis Valencia’s shot was blocked but Camara collected rebound and fired home from 10 meters (yards).

Pavlyuchenko still found time to add a third in the third minute of injury time with a swerving shot from the edge of the area on a Spurs breakaway.

The 32 third-round games have been spread over four days with 28 on Saturday, two on Sunday and one on Monday. The four traditional powerhouses avoided each other in the draw and all meet teams from the lower divisions.

Manchester United, which is the record 11-time FA Cup winner, goes to Southampton on Sunday.Chelsea hosts Southend, Arsenal welcomes Plymouth and Liverpool visits preston with Steven Gerrard leading the team even though he faces criminal assault and affray charges arising out of a brawl at a nightclub last Sunday.

Portsmouth begins its defense on Saturday at home to Bristol City from the second-tier League Championship.

Tourism recovers terror attacks

December 20, 2008 · Leave a Comment

Several countries had issued advisories for their citizens in the wake of the Mumbai terrorist attacks but many of them have toned these down, Tourism Minister Ambika Soni said.

Paying homage to those who were killed, including the security officials, in the attacks, Soni said this mayhem was perpetrated by those who do not want Indian economy to grow at 8-9 per cent.

“They are against the secular fibre of the country. We will bounce back. It is encouraging to note that the hotels run by the Tata and Oberoi groups will reopen on Dec 21,” Soni said at a meeting of the National Tourism Advisory Council (NTAC) and the stakeholders of the industry. .

Over 170 people were killed, including 26 foreigners, after 10 terrorists, who India says came from Pakistan, attacked several spots in Mumbai on the night of Nov 26 and laid siege at two five-star hotels.

The council meeting was held to discuss the problems faced by the industry in the aftermath of the Mumbai attack as well as the global meltdown.

More than 60 representatives from the hospitality, travel and tour sectors and senior state tourism officials attended the meet.

Soni said: “Some countries issued travel advisories to their citizens immediately after the Mumbai attacks, but now these advisories have been toned down.”

“India is holding its place in the world on its own and the recent high-profile visits of the Russian President and other dignitaries to India have proved that world community has faith in our country,” she said.

Russian President Dmitry Medvedev visited India earlier this month as did British Prime Minister Gordon Brown, US Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice and US Deputy Secretary of State John Negroponte.

The return of the English cricket team for a Test series and the successful organisation of the Volvo boat race in Kochi further added to India’s credence on safety parameters, she added.

Winslet had reservations about stripping

December 7, 2008 · Leave a Comment

Titanic star Kate Winslet who had posed for Vanity Fair in the nude said her initial reservations melted when she got to know that Steven Meisel would be the photographer.

The actress, who was criticised for her brushed up images for the magazine, said she had no idea that she would be baring all in the shoot but she was convinced when she came to know that Steven Meisel would be the photographer.

“I didn’t go into that shoot knowing the concept…but when you’re asked to be on the cover of Vanity Fair and
photographed by Steven Meisel, it’s a wonderful thing to experience,” Winslet told ‘WENN’.

“It’s a fantastic opportunity just to be able to have that memory in your lifetime. I absolutely had a moment of thinking, ‘I don’t believe I’m gonna take my clothes off here,’ and the next moment I thought, ‘I’m 43, I’ve had two kids, Steven Meisel is taking pictures of me naked. This is never gonna happen again!”

“I transported myself 30 years on and I wanted to be able to say, “Yeah, I did that.” That was one of those crazy, wonderful things and I’m really happy to have that memory, the actress said.

“I have the prints from the shoot that Steven gave me at the end of the day that were taken out of the camera and were blown up.”

When asked about the controversy surrounding the reported ‘touch-up’ of the pictures, Winslet said: “I will tell you the only thing they re-touched was my skin tone.”

Shah Rukh Khan spoke for the first time on the deadly terror attacks

December 3, 2008 · Leave a Comment

Bollywood superstar Shah Rukh Khan spoke for the first time on the deadly terror attacks that left over 185 dead and 300 injured.

In an interview to BBC Asia Network to be telecast this Saturday, King Khan said there were no words to express such a situation. “I’ve tried to keep away from commenting on this as there are no words to express a situation like this because our feelings are mixed with anger, disbelief and sadness.”

In light of the horrific attacks, Shah Rukh went on to give his thoughts on religion and the younger Muslim generation. “Being Muslim myself, I believe youngsters need to understand Islam and respect the religion in the right way. It’s such a huge waste and my appeal to all in these times and in recent years is that please can we run what we want in terms of politics, government, jobs and teaching our children with the prime motive of taking communalism out of it. I think no agenda should be attached to any kind of religion.”

Shah Rukh spoke passionately about his views on what he feels should be the only religion the nations’ children should follow – ‘work’; he goes on to say, “The religion our children are born with should be something they practice as a discipline and work should be developed as the new religion.”
